proprioceptor
n.
a specialized sensory nerve ending (see receptor) that monitors internal changes in the body brought about by movement and muscular activity. Proprioceptors located in muscles and tendons transmit information that is used to coordinate muscular activity (see stretch receptor, tendon organ).
